Consultation for Parents of Teens with Eating Disorders
If you are the parent of a child or teen with an eating disorder, you are probably feeling scared, overwhelmed and determined (even desperate) to find your child help. After being in this field for almost 20 years and talking to hundreds of parents and teens (on the NEDA Helpline and as a therapist), I can tell you, recovery from an eating disorder is possible and parents can play and integral role in their child's recovery. Research shows that the earlier you catch and treat an eating disorder (i.e. in the teen years), the better the chance for lasting recovery.
At the same time, it's a tough row to hoe. Parenting through eating disorder recovery requires loving, but firm boundaries, dealing with emotional outbursts and shut-down, adjusting timelines for what your child may or may not be ready for (eg. driving, sports, college), and active involvement in their recovery process.
After working with many teens, I found that most of what I offered was not wanted or utilized by 90% of my teen clients. I don't say that with any blame toward them, it's just a normal part of where they're at in their thought process and motivation. Many teens see their eating disorder as the solution to their problems, not a problem in itself. This is where parents and a Family Based Treatment approach comes in, or finding a good treatment center for your child.
If you are looking for treatment for your child, I offer consultation to guide you on the path with specific recommendations and a roadmap for the process- meant to save you years of frustration & heartache, and also money. Please reach out if you are starting this process or feeling stuck- I'd love to meet with you and offer my professional consultation for your unique situation.
